PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE – JOHN MURPHY

PRAYER

May God the Father bless us.
May God the Son heal us.
May God the Holy Spirit enlighten us,
and give us
eyes to see with,
ears to hear with,
hands to do the work of God with,
feet to walk with,
a mouth to preach the word of salvation with,
and the angel of peace to watch over us,
and lead us at last,
by our Lord's gift,
to the Kingdom.
Amen
St Bede… Pray for us

MEDIA STORY

Three of our Year 12 Student Leaders were featured in a media story last week in the Maitland Mercury. Blaze Brockman, Bella Sepos and Leila Kelly were interviewed and photographed in the story titled ‘St Bede's first year 12 cohort takes on their first major exams’. Blaze, Bella, and Leila captured the diligent and balanced approach our Year 12 students have demonstrated towards the Trial HSC exams. Congratulations to Blaze, Bella, and Leila on being excellent ambassadors for the College. Well done to our Year 12 students on their commitment to their studies and their diligent approach to the two-week exam block that concluded today.

ASPIRE

Last week over 150 student young performers, musicians, designers, and production crew from Maitland Newcastle Catholic Schools came together for the annual Aspire show. Aspire is an annual event where the most talented students come together in a drama musical show at the Newcastle Civic Centre. This year’s show, ‘The Pirate Code,’ was absolutely first-class and demonstrated the incredible talent and commitment of our schools. St Bede’s was again well represented with Harriet Price, Liam Bowling, Ava Le Breton, Lauren Appleby, Blake Skafte-Grieve, Jackson O’Loughlin, Bella Avis, and Adelaide Berry all making outstanding contributions.

PARENT FORUM

The Term 3 Parent Forum will be held next Wednesday, 16 August. These termly meetings are an important form of parent engagement and as such you are warmly invited to attend. The meeting will commence in the College Library at 6.00pm and will finish shortly after 7.00pm. Included in the agenda will be a short presentation from our Catholic Care Social Services Caseworker, Sophie King, who commenced at St Bede’s earlier in the year. We will also happily take parents on a quick tour of the College after the meeting.

To access the library, walk up the main path to the Benedict Building and turn left into the first room at the top of the stairs. Staff will also be located outside the Office to assist you in locating the library if required. No registration is required to attend so simply turn up if you would like to join us.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Please see below a message from Air Services Australia.

Williamtown (Newcastle Airport) Airspace Review: Over the last two years we have written to you regarding a plan to change arrival and departure flight paths at Williamtown (Newcastle Airport).

Following an extensive engagement campaign with communities across the Hunter region we finalised the design in September 2022, which included some changes informed by community feedback. The final design was released to the community at that time. We had originally anticipated that the proposed changes would come into effect by mid-2023, however, to ensure these changes are properly incorporated into operational procedures for our staff and the aviation industry, the flight path changes will now come into effect on 30 November 2023. For further information please go to https://engage.airservicesaustralia.com/williamtown.

SAFEGUARDING INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

St Bede’s as a Catholic Maitland-Newcastle Diocesan School has an absolute and abiding commitment to promote the safety, welfare, and wellbeing of children. As a parent sending your child or children to a Diocesan school, you should be aware of your rights and obligations in protecting your child and all children in our schools. Mr Donohoe and Mrs South (Assistant Principals) and I function as Safeguarding Promoters to ensure that our families are provided with information about the school’s approach to safeguarding children and its compliance with the Church and State Child Safe Standards.

The Children and Young Person’s (Care and Protection) Act 1998 in NSW means we can report certain information to the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ). If you have any child safety concerns please discuss your concerns with a teacher, Assistant Principal or Principal. Child protection concerns can also be reported to the Child Protection Helpline (Ph. 132 111, 24 hrs/7 days) if there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a child or young person is at risk of significant harm and the concerns are current. Risk of significant harm may occur from a single act or omission, or from a series of acts or omissions. When determining how serious your concerns for a child may be, always consider whether that child has any particular risk factors, including:

  • age, the younger the more dependent
  • physical disabilities, developmental delays, or medical conditions
  • social isolation
  • culturally diverse background
  • diverse sexuality and gender
  • nobody looking out for the child they could depend on

It is better to be safe than sorry, so if uncertain, talk to a staff member at the school. As parents, you are entitled to contact the Office of Safeguarding directly about any concerns you have about the safety, welfare, or wellbeing of a child or if you are concerned that the College is not addressing allegations of reportable conduct or abuse (Ph. 4979 1390 Monday - Friday).

Stage 6 2024 Consultation Interviews

Assistant Principal Report – Brett Donohoe and Emma South

Every day in school means so much more

Regular attendance at school is essential for students to achieve quality life outcomes.  Everyday counts, as regular attendance helps students:

  • Develop a sense of belonging
  • Develop and maintain friendships
  • Be more engaged at school
  • Progress with their learning
  • Be more aware of career and life options.

Supporting positive school attendance is a shared responsibility - everyone has a role to play in promoting the regular attendance of students. We ask that families ensure that any appointments be made outside school hours to ensure our students have the best access to their learning, all day, every day.

Student notes and approvals on Compass – parent instruction guide

If your child is unwell and unable to attend school, please add a note or approval in Compass. Please see the link to our St Bede’s Catholic College website for the Compass Parent Instructions Guide.

Stage 6 2024 Consultation Interviews

In Week 6, on Thursday 24th August between 3.30pm and 5.00pm, our Year 10 students will be involved in interviews with a representative teacher, to discuss the pathway they have selected for 2024 and beyond. These interviews will involve parents as their inclusion in these discussions is critical to student educational pathways. In these interviews we will review the selected course of study and discuss expectations of the senior school and their ATAR and non-ATAR options.

Students have received their subjects for next year and in most instances received their preferred course of study. Parents will receive an email with instructions on how to schedule their interview. We look forward to checking in with these students and ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenging and fulfilling journey ahead.

Communities that Care survey

St Bede's students in Years 8 and 10 have been invited to participate in a project to improve educational outcomes and encourage healthy child and youth development in the Maitland Local Government Area (LGA). We have been selected to participate in this project through the Maitland Place-Based Initiative (MPBI), a multi-agency initiative that aims to improve outcomes for young people in Maitland.  Parents of Year 8 and 10 students are encouraged to read the additional information provided through Compass earlier this week.

Year 11 Retreat

The Year 11 Retreat is being held from Monday to Wednesday of Week 9 (11 – 13 September). It is a College expectation that all students attend the Retreat.

  • Pillow

LEARNING DOMAIN

In Term 3 at St Bede’s, a range of leadership opportunities awaits our year 7 cohort. Over the initial four weeks of this term, we have dedicated our efforts to guiding students in recognising and developing their unique leadership strengths. We’ve also nurtured an environment where the essence of leadership grows in others, inspiring them to continue their journey. Together, we have fostered a spirit of self-motivation and peer encouragement, urging both students and their peers to step forward and apply for the four distinct leadership portfolios: Wellbeing, Stewardship, Learning and Social Justice.

Only four of our impressive cohort of 180 students will be selected to lead each of these important portfolios. This highlights two significant points: firstly, the abundance of remarkable leaders among us may lead to some not being appointed as leaders in 2023; secondly, it assures that those who do secure these leadership positions are of the highest quality.

Our commitment extends beyond the selection process. We will be engaging with the students who have thrown their hats in the ring for leadership roles and, offering them constructive feedback to increase their desire to put themselves forward for future leadership roles. We are in the process of finalising our Year 7 Leadership team and will publish this in Edition 14 of the St Bede’s Catholic College Newsletter.

Performing Arts – Michelle Burgess

Aspire 2023 Production - “The Pirate Code”

St Bede’s students were a shining force on stage in the ASPIRE production - “The Pirate Code”. Once again performances were held at the majestic Civic Theatre in Newcastle to sellout crowds.

Here are a few reflections from our students involved.

  • Bella Avis: Design/Production Crew
Working in the design crew for this year’s Aspire production of ‘The Pirate Code’ was an amazing experience for me to see what happens backstage and all the work that is put in to ensure every actor, actress, dancer, and singer looks their best. I also had the chance to assist the production team on performance dates, which was exhausting but a great way to give me additional insight into putting on a show and the effort required to make sure everything runs smoothly. Some of my favourite moments from this year had to be the production team performing all the songs and dances during sound checks with the band (we got lots of applause from the actual performers) or when we all would sit in the design room with a whole heap of sweets and just talk about anything and everything. My experience with Aspire this year has been nothing short of amazing and I am excited to be hopefully joining them again next year.
  • Blake Skafte-Grieve: Senior Drama Ensemble - The Governor
Being in ASPIRE this year has been an absolutely amazing experience. You get to learn new skills, make new friends, and be part of a production that is inclusive, creative and a lot of fun. My role in ASPIRE this year was ‘The Governor’, a comedic villain who wants to raise taxes and get money for his new conservatory, despite being a little bit demanding and very over the top, he is definitely a fan favourite and a wonderful character to play. ASPIRE allows students to step into the theatre world, and what it would be like to be part of a professional production. Another great thing about ASPIRE is the opportunity to be able to be a part of a Drama, Vocal, Band, or Dance ensemble. This allows students to choose what they want to do in the show, ASPIRE also is open to submissions to join the Design/Creative team which lets students be part of the costuming, and prop process of the show for those who may not be a performer and like working behind the scenes. Overall, if you are interested in performing arts ASPIRE is a great place to start and I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in creative and performing arts.
  • Liam Bowling: Instrumental Ensemble - Drummer
Being in ASPIRE this year was a great opportunity to practice my skills and make many friends. Being in the production and seeing it all come together was a great experience and it was good to see how well a band and a cast can join to create something great. ASPIRE allows students to unlock the ability to be the best musician, singer, dancer, designer, or actor they can be. I would highly recommend any aspiring students who want to be in the production to have a shot and sign up for an audition.
  • Harriet Price – Senior Vocal Ensemble - Powder Monkey
Being in Aspire was an amazing opportunity. I have made friends and learnt new skills that I can use outside and inside aspire. As a Powder Monkey vocalist I have had the experience of both singing and learning drama skills through being in scenes with drama. I believe that one of the main elements of Aspire is getting to know each other, and each other's passions for what they do in the production. I have made friends in so many other ensembles. If I could do this show again, then I would do it a thousand times over because I've had such a great time. Being a part of a musical production is a new adventure every show, especially Anna's shows.
I encourage other people to audition for Aspire because it will be an adventure they haven't gone on before and they will create a family inside the massive family Aspire is.
  • Jackson O’Loughlin: Senior Drama Ensemble - Lieutenant Short
I am extremely grateful to have been a part of the ASPIRE family this year. I will never forget the memories I made with new and old friends. ASPIRE is something that I am very passionate about and is very special to me. This year, I played the role of Lieutenant Short, a stubborn yet cunning man who must endure being The Governor’s lackey. It was a character that allowed me to let loose and release my emotions into many of my lines. I enjoyed playing him immensely and would love to continue doing so. Being a part of the Senior Drama ensemble, surrounded by people who supported me every step was great. This year was such a good show. From beautiful sets to the amazing performances and songs from the others of the cast, it will be one that I will miss. I could not recommend being a part of it enough. It’s a fantastic opportunity that I believe everyone should consider being a part of in some way. Being able to connect and work with others, and watching everyone put everything into their performance, I loved it all. This was a wonderful experience that I will remember.

HSC Drama Performance Evening

Last Wednesday evening Year 12 Drama students presented their Group Performances and Individual Projects to a live audience. It is important for our students to experience performing for a live audience and it was so lovely to see parents and friends there to support our very first HSC Drama class. Their HSC Drama Practical Examination is scheduled for Tuesday 29 August, and we wish these clever students all the very best during the final preparation time leading up to this date. Thank you also to Ms Megan Peacock for her expertise and guidance in stepping into this role with Ms Eleanor Martin being on maternity leave. Chookas! Year 12.

Stage 5 Drama - Year 9

Year 9 Drama students have made a great start to Semester 2. With a trip to the Civic Theatre to see Aspire’s The Pirate Code in Week 3.

Students have been continuing to develop their acting skills in class. This term the class has been hard at work creating a self-devised performance piece based on the theme of conflict. It’s been amazing to see the creative and theatrical directions that the class have been taking this theme in and I’m excited to see how they develop over the coming weeks.

Stage Band

Our St.Bede's Stage Band has achieved some substantial accomplishments throughout Term 2. This group rehearses each Friday break 1 and perform extremely well given they only have 20 minutes a week to come together and make music!

Our Stage Band gave their first externally public performance at Chapel Jazz in Morpeth in May. The group rehearsed and prepared an hour set of music including "Take Me to the River", "Feeling Good", "Superstition" and a jazzed-up version of "The Pretender" by the Foo Fighters. With some of our staff, students and families in attendance on the day our Stage Band represented our college with pride, vigour and musical flair.  We have had extremely positive feedback from local parish members who throughly enjoyed our student's performance, and that St. Bede's definitely held their own on a day that included performances from other well-known local performing arts schools. Through music our student's embodied how to Shine with Christs Glory and the standard we aspire to here at St. Bedes.

Stage Band also played an integral role within our college's performance at DioSounds, performing alongside other students and modelling where music performance can take you through diligent effort and commitment. Performing within the "Passenger" and "Let Me Entertain You" sections of our performance, all students performed with their hearts and received massive cheers and response from the crowd, particularly at the matinee school's performance in the morning.

As Year 12 are coming to the end of our studies, Stage Band is now moving into a transition phase welcoming new members to fill the schools of those who will be leaving us. It has been encouraging to see that our Year 12 students are coming in to mentor our new and younger students when their study commitments allow. This is definitely a tradition we are keen to foster and nurture as we continue to build our high-quality music community.

2023 St Bede’s Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to every member of the St Bede’s Community that attended the Athletics Carnival at Maitland Athletics Centre on Monday 24 July. “School spirit” was on show with students and teachers decked out in their house colours, cheering on the races and singing their house cheers loudly and proudly. There were so many students demonstrating the “have a go” attitude. Thank you to all students who helped on the day either in the canteen or on field/track events. House Captains you should be very proud of your efforts. It was great to see MANY records being broken on the day in both track and field events.

While our carnivals are community events, it is important to recognise both the House Champions and the Individual Age Champions. Good luck to all students who are participating in the Diocesan Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 16 August at Glendale. The CCCNSW Carnival is on the 11 September.

This State level carnival has the best students from Catholic (CCC), Public (CHS), Independent (CIS) and Private (GPS) Schools competing in the most competitive level for cross country, short of Nationals. We had some fantastic results in some big fields with over 90 students in some races.

Congratulations:

  • Coen Morgan 5th in the U/16
  • Zach Thomson 13th in the U/14
  • Phoenix Borja 42nd in the U/12

Bill Turner Cup

On Friday 21 July, the girls’ Bill Turner team played Mackillop College from Port Macquarie in round 5 of the trophy. The team, unfortunately, went down 4-1, with a goal scored for St Bede’s by Tiana Black. All of the girls are to be commended for their positive attitude and sportsmanship. They also are to be congratulated on their achievement of making it to the final 32 schools in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales, and winning their region final in their last game. Well done girls!

Snow Sports

On July 4 – 7, Zahlia and Isha Monkley represented SBCC at the Northern NSW and Queensland Regional Snow Championships where they competed in Snowboard Cross and Snowboard GS. This was the first time that students from St Bede’s represented at these championships. Isha and Zalia both placed 3rd as a Team in Snowboard Giant Slalom and 3rd in the Teams Snowboarder Cross. Both girls have now qualified for State Championships at Perisher in August. We wish them all the best. Congratulations girls!

Touch Football

Harry Lidbury of Year 9, has been selected to compete in the 2023 School Sport Australia 15 Years and Under Touch Football Championships in Darwin NT, this coming August. This is an outstanding achievement, and we wish him all the best.

Naidoc Cup vs Football NSW

The NAIDOC Cup is for selected Indigenous footballers aged 13 to 16 to represent Northern NSW Football against Indigenous teams from Football NSW.

The NAIDOC Cup coincided with NAIDOC Week, a national week that was held in July that celebrated the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

More than 120 First Nations players aged between 13 and 16 will converge on Valentine Sports Park for the second annual NAIDOC Cup in July.

Jak Hunter (Year 10) and Hallei Chegwidden McGregor (Year 7) competed in the 3-day tournament. Jak was awarded player of the tournament and Hallei was the captain of the U14’s side. Congratulations to both of these students for their efforts and contributions on the day.

U16’s Boys Rugby League

On Thursday 3rd August our U16s Boys took their talent to Somerset Park for a Rugby League Gala day. With victories over Maitland High School (14-4) and Tomaree High School (14-6), our boys made it through to the knockout stages for the first time in school Rugby League.

Facing a very well-drilled and strong St Pius X, our boys unfortunately ended the day with a defeat (18-0). The boys all displayed fantastic team spirit and demonstrated this throughout the entire day. They should be very proud of how physical and determined they were. Great work boys!

Hunter Valley Netball Carnival

On Thursday 3 August, students ranging from Years 7-10 participated in the NSW Netball Schools Cup. All students involved in this day demonstrated great netball skills and represented St Bede’s with pride. The 7/8 girls (A team) were undefeated on the day, progressing to the Finals and winning convincingly. This placed them first out of 11 teams on the day. Our 9/10 girls (A team) also progressed to the finals and won convincingly. Both of these teams have progressed to the Hunter Regionals for the first time ever! Our 7/8 and 9/10 B teams are also commended for their participation and sportsmanship on the day. Your determination and team spirit were admirable. A special mention to the following students who were voted by their teammates for ‘Players player’:

  • 7/8 B team: Lilly Vella
  • 7/8 A team: Addison Elbourne
  • 9/10 B team: Isha Monkley

Year 8 Student Sporting Achievements – Kelly Pearson and Abby O’Connor

Oliver Gorton

In 2022 Oliver was playing u13s in the NNSW National Premier League (NPL) competition at Maitland FC whilst also training with a select group of players in the u12s Talent Support Program (TSP) for NNSW. After various trials with Newcastle Jets selectors Oliver was chosen at season’s end in 2022 as one of 16 players to represent and play for the Newcastle Jets FC Academy in the u13s squad for 2023. The Newcastle Jets Academy play within the Football NSW Boys Youth League 1 Competition which is the top tier league of youth football in NSW. The competition consists of 16 teams competing in a home and away competition; each club plays 30 rounds from U13 through to U18, and upon completion a championship series is run for each group.

The Newcastle Jets Academy is part of the Elite Male Player Pathway within A League and FNSW programs to higher honours within Australian Football and Oliver is very lucky to be a part of this program at this stage of his football journey.

Joss Black

Joss competes in traditional forms doing karate-ka at an intermediate level on a mixed martial arts tournament circuit. In 2022, Joss placed regionally at Port Macquarie and Orange and at Sydney in State. In December in Port Macquarie, she attended Nationals and placed 2nd in intermediate mixed boys and girls and 2nd in advanced girls. Joss also came 1st in xtreme forms, a mixed gymnastics/karate. Joss also received an invitation to join the Australian Squad in 2023.

During the Term 2 holidays, Joss passed her grading with flying colours and now has her brown belt.

Lily Sutton

Lily was selected as one of six Australian Futsal players to represent Australia at the 2023 United Kingdom Futsal Tournament.

The Australian Futsal Under 14’s Women’s Team competed in the United Kingdom over the Easter break (April 2023) against some of the best players from Scotland, Wales and England. Lily played 16 games in total, her team won 9, drew 3 and lost 4. In her second game at the Scossie Cup she was awarded player of the match and her team ended up going down in the final when they drew 0-0 and had to fight it out with penalties.

This was an opportunity of a lifetime for Lily and she was the highest point scorer with 23 goals overall and was acknowledged at the Award Ceremony for the best header goal of the whole Tournament.

Zachary Thomson

Zach has had an amazing Cross Country Season this year. It started with attending the World Cross Country Championships held in Australia for the first time at Bathurst in February. He competed in the Schools event for his age and met XC Relay Team Bronze Medalists Jessica Hull and Stewart McSween.

Zach achieved a bronze medal in the Under 14’s at CCC at the Equestrian Centre on 13th June. He also represented St Bede’s in the CCC Team at NSW All Schools at Eastern Creek on 21st July, placing 13th in U/14s.

Zach also competed in the NSW Cross Country Championships on 17th June in Willandra Nowra and came 4th in his age. Zach achieved a time of 14 minutes flat on a very hilly course and his first ever Nationals Automatic Qualification (top 7 in State Automatically Qualify to represent NSW at the Australian XC Championships).

Zach is very excited to represent NSW in Canberra on 26th August 2023 for the Australian Cross Country Championships.

Congratulations to all students. Mrs Pearson and Miss O’Connor know there are many other stars amongst Year 8 and would love to hear about your successes! Keep up the fantastic work.
