PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE – AMBER CARTER

 PRAYER

God of hope and promise.
As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week,
we remember what Jesus said:
"The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few;
therefore ask the Lord of the harvest
to send out labourers into his harvest.”
We thank you for all the good things you give us.
Help us to remember that everything we have is a gift from you,
and that we should share it with others.
Fill our hearts with your love.
Help us to be kind, hopeful, and caring,
and to make a difference in the lives of the people around us.
In our classrooms, help us to learn not just facts,
but how to be better people.
Show us how to follow Jesus by being loving and forgiving.
Bless all the teachers and staff in our Catholic schools.
Help them to keep working with joy and strength.
As we celebrate the gift of Catholic education,
send us out to be your helpers in the world.
Let our actions show others how much you love them.
We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
St Bede … Pray for us.

Catholic Schools: Equipping Students To Flourish

Recently I had the privilege of listening to eminent education futurist Pasi Sahlberg discuss the future of education, and the conditions required for students to flourish. Sahlberg referenced the Reinventing Schools Discuss Paper which outlines several key principles to support student engagement in learning, so they are prepared for a future that looks vastly different from the present. The underlying focus of Sahlberg’s presentation was the connection between student learning and wellbeing – one does not exist without the other. On reflection, Catholic schools are well placed to prepare students to thrive in the future by not only nurturing academic excellence but also focusing on purpose, character and faith which are key constructs for wellbeing. The core mission of a faith education is a focus on forming the whole person – intellectually, spiritually and socially, equipping students to live meaningful, hope-filled lives in a rapidly changing world.

Catholic Education Week 2025, which runs from 2 June to 6 June, offers families, their children and educators in Catholic schools and opportunity to celebrate the unique identity and mission of Catholic schools. This year, with the Jubilee Year in place, the theme Pilgrims of Hope resonates strongly with our schools. We use the word ‘pilgrims’ not to suggest that we are walking dusty roads with hiking poles, but rather to symbolise that we are all on a journey – teachers, students and families. And

hope? That’s what keeps us moving forward, even when the path isn’t clear. Catholic Schools Week is an opportunity to celebrate not only academic excellence but also the values that shape our students into compassionate, resilient, and hopeful leaders of tomorrow.

Our Catholic schools are places where students are nurtured intellectually, spiritually, and socially. We strive to embody the call from Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven,” encouraging every student to let their unique light shine in the world.

Catholic Schools Week reminds us that education is not just about knowledge but about forming hearts and minds to serve others and to let our light shine. As we celebrate this week, we renew our dedication to fostering faith-filled learners who will contribute positively to society, carrying forward the light of Christ in all they do. Let us embrace this time to rejoice in our shared mission and look forward with hope.

Pentecost Sunday

On Sunday 8 June the Catholic Church celebrates Pentecost Sunday. This celebration recognises the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, empowering them to spread the message of Jesus Christ to the world. It marks the birth of the Church and reminds us of the Spirit’s ongoing presence and guidance in our lives. As we approach Pentecost Sunday, I warmly encourage you to join the Chisholm Region of Parises in celebrating this special feast.

Details of mass times can be found on the Chisholm Region of Parishes website:

Catholic Schools Week Liturgy

Continuing with the theme of Catholic Schools Week, it was a privilege to attend the Catholic Schools Week Liturgy with several of our students. Two of our St Bede’s students conducted the Acknowledgement of Country with two St Aloysius students. Each year, different schools are asked to conduct the Acknowledgment of Country, and it was a great honour for our students to be involved. We thank Lylah Dawson (Year 8) and Angus Mahon (Year 7) for their representation and for speaking the Acknowledgement of Country so confidently and with pride. Thanks is also extended to Year 11 student leaders Zachary Bolton, Angelique Currey, Scarlett Jones and Willian Tang for attending the liturgy with Mr. Andrew Slater, Ms. Karen Chapman, Ms. Monique Crick and myself.

Year 11 2026 Senior Studies Expo

Year 10 students received their Senior Studies Handbook this week in preparation for the Senior Studies Expo on 17 June starting at 5:30pm. Leader of Learning Curriculum, Mr. Russell Jones, Leader of Learning Careers Ms. Jennie Nemeth, and Leader of Wellbeing and Engagement Mr. Samuel Rowlings have been working closely with Year 10 students to prepare them for their selection of courses for Year 11.

The theme for the evening is Imagining Possibilities which aims to encourage students to explore all opportunities available to them at the College for their senior studies. As a comprehensive Catholic high school, we have intentionally designed our offerings for senior studies to meet the diverse needs of students who wish to pursue tertiary studies or who may be considering a vocational or trade pathway.

We are looking forward to welcoming families and students for this important event. If you have any questions regarding course selection for 2026, please contact Mr. Rowlings, Mr. Jones or Ms. Lauren McCafferty, Assistant Principal.

Building Update

A significant milestone was achieved on Friday 30 May with Richard Crooks finalising works on the College site. A handover meeting was conducted which included representatives from Richard Crooks and the SHAC architects for the cricket nets, handball courts and changeroom facilities. It is such a joy to see students enjoying using the handball courts and utilising the seating and undercover areas. The smaller field will be in use next week with the larger field opening later in the year. We have promised Mr. Murphy the first use of the cricket nets when he returns next term!

Family Coffee Morning

On Thursday 19 June we warmly welcome parents and carers to a coffee morning at our Bede’s Bites Café starting at 8:00am. This is an opportunity to drop in and have a coffee (or tea) and meet other parents/carers and staff. We are fortunate to have the café up and running each week and this is an opportunity to share this with our families and create connections within our community. Last term we welcomed representatives from Catholic Care and this term we will be hearing from our Aboriginal Education Teachers Ms. Karen Chapman and Ms. Talise Pickavance and Aboriginal Education Assistant Ms. Monique Crick. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Catholic Formation and Mission – Andrew Slater

Catholic Schools Week

From 2 - 6 June, we celebrate Catholic Schools Week - a time to honour the vibrant communities within our Catholic schools in the Diocese of Maitland Newcastle. This week highlights the dedication of staff, the growth of students, and the shared mission to nurture each child spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. Catholic education is about helping every student flourish and become the person God calls them to be, through learning that inspires both the heart and mind.

We have much to be proud of in our endeavours to provide our young people with a well-rounded education that meets their needs today and for their future. We are deeply grateful for our thriving community, where teachers, parents and parish come together in unparalleled levels of care providing safe, supportive and inclusive surroundings which nurture students’ wellbeing, confidence and hope for themselves.

In this Jubilee Year, we are blessed with opportunities to share the love of Jesus Christ and remind ourselves that growing in faith builds firm trust in God’s promises. It is our trust in God’s promises that fills us with hope—even in our darkest moments, God's faithfulness never fades. May this week inspire us to live each day with joyful hearts and steadfast hope in the Lord.

Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat

The College will celebrate the feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, patron saint of Marian House, on Tuesday 10 June. Students are invited to dress in blue and make a gold coin donation to Vinnies Winter Appeal.

This winter, Vinnies volunteer members across Australia are seeing an unprecedented demand for homelessness services and support. Your generous support on the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat can help vulnerable people in our local community who are at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness with the urgent help they need. Vinnies supports people with food, clothing, and assistance with essential bills.

We ask you to give generously to Vinnies on 10 June. Our donations can make a difference.

LEARNING DOMAIN

Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing and Engagement – Lauren Power and Abby O’Connor

Year 8 made an excellent start to Term 2!

It has also been a term with some changes for the students as Ms Power moved into the Leader of Learning – HSIE role for Weeks 5-10, and Miss O’Connor moved into the Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement role for the remainder of the term.

We have continued our focus on organisation, with our first Wellbeing Session being dedicated to students updating their calendars and getting prepared for the busy term ahead. Please see the attached Term 2 Calendar for further details about the remainder of the term.

Thank you to the Year 8 students who have submitted Illness and Misadventure forms for assessments they missed due to the weather, sport and other exciting events. A reminder that these forms are available at Student Services and in the Year 8 Assessment Handbooks on Compass.

Click here to download the Year 8 Term 2 Calendar

We have also seen a number of Year 8 students showcasing their gifts and talents across many areas of College life.

Despite a relatively strong start to the term, students have been addressed about a few issues.

We appreciate your support in maintaining the College’s high expectations, especially in relation to the Uniform and Grooming Policy. This includes appropriate hair colours and styles, minimal jewellery and safe joggers for PDHPE. All students should also have a school hat to wear on the yard.

We have also reinforced the importance of showing kindness to each other. Our students are heavily impacted by the media they consume, including ‘trends’ from social media. Students have been reminded about speaking kindly to each other and being accountable for their words and actions.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s progress and/or wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact abby.oconnor1@mn.catholic.edu.au for the remainder of Term 2.

Aboriginal Education – Karen Chapman

As a nation, Australia celebrates National Reconciliation Week (NRW) from 27May to the 3June. It is a week-long observance for all Australians, to recognise and commemorate the history and culture of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. National Sorry Day on 26 May leads into the week, with the Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum being on 27 May. Mabo Day on 3June rounds off this important week. The 2025 theme is Bridging Now to Next, encouraging us all to reflect on the connection between past, present and future.

St Bede’s commemorated with whole school activities held across the week. Students were encouraged to colour-in a native hibiscus, which has been chosen by Northern Territory elders as a sign of strength and healing for NRW. House Points were awarded for a returned flower, with the result being a beautiful display of purple along the Peregrine Trail!

Staff and students from our Social Justice and Wellbeing Committees also worked on an outdoor flower display, visible to our whole community, as a sign of our support of National Reconciliation Week.

On Thursday 29 May, our whole school gathered to commemorate National Reconciliation Week with a prayer service, led by our student leaders. All students then did a reflective Walk for Reconciliation through the Peregrine Trail, to Ngarramalingiil, our Yarning Circle area, to take part in a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony. This ancient healing and cleansing ritual use’s smouldering eucalyptus leaves and has been a practice for thousands of years. The ceremony was led by local Aboriginal man, Uncle Alex Nean.

House Coordinator – Beau Dalton

As Term 2 is well and truly underway, it’s time to provide an update on The House Cup! Congratulations to Dominic, who rose to the challenge of taking the crown from Benedict and were the winners of Term 1. Students from Dominic House will have a sausage sizzle lunch provided by the college as their reward, this should be in Week 7.

At the midway point, Benedict have taken charge thanks to a large involvement in The Reconciliation Week Mural. McAuley are close on their heels with Marian and Dominic are not too far behind. Remember – everything you do can contribute to house points, whether it be merits, participating in school-based clubs, representing the college or participating in school activities such as the Reconciliation Week Display.

I wanted to also remind all parents and students of the different clubs that are running at our college that earn house points. These are:

  • Connection Club: Mondays at Break 2 (Level 2 C Block Peregrine Trail)
  • Book Club: Tuesdays at Break 2 (Learning Hub)
  • Creator Space: Wednesdays at Break 1 (Learning Hub)
  • Chess Club: Wednesdays at Break 2 (Learning Hub)

Visual Arts – Leisha Young

Celebrating Creativity: Year 11 Visual Arts

The College is proud to showcase a captivating display of artworks created by our senior Visual Arts students, now adorning the walls of Mr. Murphy and Mrs. Cater’s Meeting Room. Inspired by the pioneering German ‘Dada’ artist, Hannah Höch, students have explored themes of feminism, identity, and creativity through combinations of text, image, and collage materials.

Hannah Höch, renowned for her photomontage techniques and critical stance on gender roles, provided a rich source of inspiration for students as they investigated how art can be used as a powerful medium for social commentary. Embracing her legacy, our students examined the evolving roles of women in society, the impact of visual culture, and the importance of individual expression.

Through their use of fragmentation and layering—hallmarks of the Dada movement—students constructed personal and provocative narratives. The collages reflect a diverse range of perspectives, drawing from personal expression and the visual language of popular media. Each work stands as a testament to the students’ ability to synthesise conceptual ideas with their material practice.

Before leaving for his Mission trip, Mr. Murphy expressed great pleasure in hosting the artworks in his meeting room, noting that they provide an engaging and thoughtful backdrop for both visitors and discussions. The display not only celebrates the creative achievements of our Visual Arts cohort but also affirms the College’s commitment to fostering critical thinking and cultural literacy through artistic practice.

Congratulations to our exhibiting students:
Cassandra Stretton, Jorja Kowalski, Lilliana Craig, Mia Gooch, Isabella Ellis, Emily Yager, Sophie Meehan, Thea Wyatt, Bianca Robinson, Alyssa Longton, Molly Surtees, Paige Pannowitz, Amahli Diaz and Eliza Bowles.

NSWCCC Football Trials

Congratulations to Tatenda Goora, Theo Law, Payton Wheeler, and Lily Sutton who represented the Newcastle-Maitland Diocese at the NSWCCC Football Trials on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 of May at Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood. This year was our most successful year yet, having four students representing St Bede’s at this tournament.

The MN Boys had a strong start to the competition, beating Paramatta Gold 2-1 and Paramatta Blue 1-0. Payton Wheeler found himself on the scoresheet with a strong header which gave MN an all important victory against Paramatta Blue. Strong performances from Theo Law and Tatenda Goora also caught the eye of the selectors.

The MN Girls started day one with a win and a draw, remaining undefeated for the fourth consecutive year in a row. Two wins on Day 2 and the girls would be through to their fourth consecutive final. Lily made her mark on the games, beginning as a fullback then being utilised as a midfielder, controlling the game for her team.

On Day 2, both teams had the same objective, win both games to progress to the final. The boys started the day off with a convincing 5-2 win against Southern Country, with Tatenda Goora finding himself on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, the boys lost to a strong Sydney Orange side 5-1 who went on to win the competition. Payton Wheeler once again found himself on the scoresheet scoring another header from a set piece.

The girls won both of their matches and progressed to a fourth consecutive grand final vs Wollongong. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be as the girls lost 1-0.

Equestrian

Gracie Clements (Year 9) recently represented St Bede’s Catholic College at the Northwest Equestrian Expo in Coonabarabran. The Expo is the largest High School Equestrian Event in Australia and comprises of around 500 Riders across 100 Schools.

Gracie competed across several demanding disciplines: Show Jumping, Combined Training, and the Working Horse Challenge. She qualified for the final round of the Working Horse Challenge and also earned the title of Reserve Champion in the 80cm Show Jumping.

Gracie finished off her experience at the Expo this year by competing in the Team Barrel Race. This race consisted of around 300 riders and is a much-loved competition by all at the Expo.
