St Bede's Catholic College Newsletter - Edition 7 - 23 May 2025
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE – JOHN MURPHY
PRAYER
O God,
shepherd and ruler of all the faithful,
look favourably upon your servant, Leo XIV,
whom you have set at the head of your Church
as her shepherd;
grant, we pray, that by word and example
he may be of service to those over whom he presides
so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care,
he may come to everlasting life.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
St Bede … Pray for us.
POPE LEO XIV
As a Catholic community, we rejoice in the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV last Sunday 18 May, as the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church. We pray that the world is inspired by Pope Leo’s unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and love at this uncertain time. Having Father Priyantha as our Priest Chaplain is of enormous benefit to us as a Catholic school community, as we are committed to integrating the teachings and directions of Pope Leo into the education of our students.
As per the newsletter at the end of last term, I will be taking 6-weeks leave this term. This leave commences next Monday 26 May, with a return date of the start of Term 3 on Monday 21 July. Inspired by the late Pope Francis’ choice of the theme of ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ for this year’s 2025 Jubilee, my travels overseas will include two religious pilgrimages.
The first pilgrimage, titled ‘Footsteps of St Paul’, will include visiting sites in Greece and Türkiye where St Paul established Christian communities and wrote his letters to them. The second pilgrimage, titled ‘Mary & the Saints’, will visit sites in Portugal, Spain, and France where some of the Church’s most renowned saints, including St Teresa, St Dominic, St Ignatius, and St Bernadette lived. I look forward to sharing my insights and reflections on these pilgrimages upon my return at the start of Term 3.
- In taking this leave, the following temporary appointments have occurred which are summarised below.
Mrs. Amber Carter will move from her current Assistant Principal’s position into the Principal’s position. - Ms. McCafferty will move from her current HSIE Leader of Learning position into the Assistant Principal position.
- Ms. Lauren Power will move from her Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement position into the Human Society in its Environment (HSIE) Leader of Learning position.
- Ms. Abby O’Connor will move from her Year 7 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement position on Fridays into the Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement.
- Mr. Lachlan Vaughan who is the Wellbeing Coordinator for Year 7, 9, & 11, will continue in his current position and will also be the Year 7 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement on Fridays.

Mrs. Amber Carter

Ms. Lauren McCafferty

Ms. Lauren Power

Ms. Abby O’Connor

Mr. Lachlan Vaughan
The temporary appointments will enable these five staff members to have new experiences, as they step into either more senior or different leadership positions. This will provide them with invaluable leadership experiences, while for the school it enables different perspectives and ideas to be explored as part of our commitment to review and improvement.
I look forward to returning at the start of Term 3.

Senior Studies Expo- Week 8
Term 2 marks an exciting time for Year 10 students as they embark on the process of considering their opportunities for senior studies and beyond. This is the first time students have advocacy in selecting their full pattern of study as they embark on their final years of secondary education. The HSC remains a significant award for students as it is an internationally recognised credential that provides a foundation for future education and career pathways. Students refine and develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and time management which are essential skills for effective engagement in further study and work. At St Bede’s we recognise our imperative to ensure our students are future ready and have the capacity to embrace change and opportunity and importantly, to imagine possibilities.
A pinnacle of this process is the Senior Studies Expo which will be held on the evening of Tuesday 17 June. The purpose of this evening is to provide students and families with an overview of the comprehensive range of courses available at St Bede’s.

We have intentionally designed our offerings for senior studies to meet the diverse needs of students who wish to pursue tertiary studies or who may be considering a vocational or trade pathway. During Careers lessons, students have been engaging in preparation for the Senior Studies evening, and the Course Selection Booklet will be made available to students and families two weeks before the event. We work closely with students and families to ensure students pattern of study offers them the right level of challenge, so they continue to realise of value of being a successful learner.
Further details regarding the evening and the process of course selection will be made available to students and families closer to the event. Please mark your calendars and save the date for this exciting evening.
If you have any questions regarding the process of course selection for senior studies, please contact either:
- Mr. Russell Jones, Leader of Curriculum
- Mr. Samuel Rowlings, Year 10 Leader of Wellbeing and Engagement
- Ms. Lauren McCafferty, Assistant Principal (Acting, weeks 4- 10)
Year 7–10 Reports and Upcoming Parent-Teacher Interviews
Year 7 to 10 academic reports will be available to parents and students via Compass on Friday, 27 June.
These reports provide valuable insight into each student’s academic progress and areas for improvement. We encourage all families to take the time to review them carefully and discuss the feedback together.
Parent-Teacher Interviews (PTIs) for Years 7–10 will be held in person at the College on the following dates:
- Thursday, 3 July: 3:30pm – 7:30pm
- Friday, 4 July: 9:00am – 3:00pm
Parent-Teacher Interviews are an important opportunity to strengthen the partnership between home and school. These conversations allow families and teachers to work collaboratively to support each student’s learning journey.
Please note that Friday, 1 July will be a Pupil-Free Day.
Further details regarding the interview booking process and other relevant information will be provided closer to the date.
Reminder About Parking Considerations in the Residential Area
We kindly remind all parents and carers to be mindful of where they park when dropping off or picking up children from school. There have been several complaints from local residents regarding vehicles blocking driveways and parking inappropriately in the surrounding streets.
Please be aware that residents have been encouraged to report repeat offenders by taking note of number plates and contacting the local council.
Let’s work together to maintain positive relationships with our St Bede’s neighbours and ensure the safety and respect of our school community.
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact the college if you wish to discuss your child’s learning or wellbeing needs. Let us always shine in Christ’s glory.
Catholic Formation and Mission – Andrew Slater
Year 7 Reflection Day
The Year 7 Reflection Day was held on Wednesday 14May. The day started with Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Morpeth, where we were joined by members of the parish community. Year 7 musicians, accompanied by Mr. Thornton and Mrs. Burgess, provided beautiful, reflective hymns.
After returning to school, the students participated in meaningful activities in small groups, before visiting the Mary, Mother of Hope Oratory, where they were able to participate in a Q&A session, helping to answer all their questions about Mass and the Oratory.

St Bede’s Feast Day
Yesterday, the College celebrated the feast of St Bede. Whilst the day had to be adjusted significantly due to the weather, it was still a wonderful event which brought together the whole community. The celebrations began with a reflective liturgy presided over by Fr Priyantha. Following this, Homerooms participated in activities. This year, we raised money for Catholic Care, which is the social service agency for the Diocese of Maitland Newcastle. This money will help Catholic Care to support people within the local community. There will be a pizza and cans of drink day later this term which will also contribute to Catholic Care.
Year 11 Retreat
The Year 11 Retreat is being held from Wednesday to Friday of Week 6 (4 – 6 June). It is a College expectation that all students attend the Retreat.
The theme of the Retreat is Journey, which enables students to explore the idea that we are all on the journey of life. There will be a range of large and small group activities, along with free time.
Students are required to bring the following items with them:
- 2 sheets OR 1 sheet and a sleeping bag (if students choose to bring a sleeping bag, they must still place a sheet on the mattress)
- Pillow
- Towel
- Drink bottle
- Enough clean clothing (that meets College expectations) for the three days
- Toiletries
The Retreat is fully catered. As such, students are not to bring any additional food or snacks with them. You will receive an email regarding the retreat and dietary requirements. Please ensure that this is completed and returned by the due date.

Year 7 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement - Amber Pyne & Abby O'Connor
An Exciting Start for Year 7 2025
Our Year 7 students made an outstanding start to their high school journey! From day one, they showed resilience, curiosity, and a growing sense of independence as they embraced the new routines and expectations of secondary school.
Camp
A standout highlight so far has undoubtedly been the Year 7 Camp at Point Wolstoncroft. Over three days of adventure and friendship-building, students took part in a range of exciting outdoor activities, from kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding to archery and mountain bike riding. The energy, enthusiasm, and encouragement they showed each other was nothing short of amazing. It was also great to have both our College Principal Mr. John Murphy and Assistant Principal Ms. Rebel Clarke join in on the fun. A particularly memorable moment was our student's vs staff in the ‘Waspital’ game. Mr. Murphy’s enthusiastic swatting of students with a pool noodle was a highlight that had everyone laughing!
Back at school, we have been incredibly impressed with how Year 7 continued to settle in - navigating their timetables, managing lockers and equipment, and taking responsibility for their learning. It has been a fantastic start, and we look forward to supporting them as they continue to grow and flourish throughout the year.

Technology
A gentle reminder about technology and mobile phones – while students have been mostly respectful of our expectations, we have noticed the increasing use of mobile phones during the school day. As a community, we value face-to-face connection and focused learning time. Please remind your child that mobile phones should be switched off and kept in lockers/bags from the start of the day until the final bell. Your support with this is greatly appreciated.
Year 7 Organisation
Attached to this newsletter is a copy of our Term 2 Calendar, which includes major assessments and key events. Each student was issued with a hard copy for your convenience.
As we look ahead to Term 2, students are reminded to use the calendar to organise their time effectively and take note of when assessments are due. It is great to see some students using various planners and diaries to keep themselves organised too! Developing good planning and time management habits now will set them up for success throughout high school.
Please be reminded that in Ms. O’Connor’s absence, Mr. Vaughan will be taking over the role of Year 7 Lowe on Fridays until the remainder of the term. We can be contacted via the following: amber.pyne@mn.catholic.edu.au and lachlan.vaughan@mn.catholic.edu.au with any questions or concerns.
We’re so proud of our Year 7 cohort and can’t wait to see what they achieve in the term ahead!

Mr. Coates Interviewed by Virtual Academy Students at St Aloysius
On Wednesday 13 May, Mr. Coates visited St Aloysius to take part in an interview conducted by two students from the Virtual Academy. As part of their in-depth inquiry into the Soviet Union during the Russian Revolution and World War II, the students prepared and asked a series of thoughtful, research-driven questions. Mr. Coates’ insights and historical knowledge provided valuable context and supported the students in deepening their understanding of this complex period. This experience highlights the power of student-led learning, and the rich opportunities offered through the Virtual Academy program.

Human Society and It’s Environment – Lauren McCafferty
Year 8 Humanities
Students of Year 8 Humanities have had an exciting start to the year learning about The Medieval World. Students had the opportunity to experience an immersive incursion last term where we had a presenter, Justin, from Hollandia Enterprises, visit the College.
Justin presented to our students about Medieval Europe, specifically heraldry and armour as well as interesting facts about weaponry. Students learned about health in Medieval times and were disgusted to learn about the lack of sanitation that then resulted in diseases and lower life expectancy.
A further highlight of the presentation was learning about Medieval medicine complete with real leeches (we were relieved when we realised these were a prop made of watery liquorice!) as part of the demonstration. We were fortunate to be able to engage with a range of replica artefacts as part of the incursion whereby students could try on armour and helmets.

Reading at St Bede’s
Developing a reading culture here at St Bede’s, where reading is valued, promoted and nurtured, is very important. Regular reading has been shown to enhance concentration and memory, as well as improve spelling and widen vocabulary. Students who read regularly become competent readers who then experience greater success in their writing skills and overall learning.
There are many ways students are encouraged with their reading here at school:
- Students in Years 7 to 10 engage in 10 minutes of silent reading at the beginning of every English/HSIE lessons.
- Students are given the opportunity to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge where the goal is to read 20 books during Terms 1, 2 and 3. We have 40 students completing the challenge this year (with some eager bookworms already finished!). The completion date for the Challenge has been extended for this year – students now have until Friday 19 September 2025 (Week 9, Term 3) to read their books. It is also not too late to join the challenge – any students who would still like to do the challenge can come to the Learning Hub and see Mrs. McKinnon for information.
- To support our passionate readers, we have started a book club that meets every Tuesday during Break 2. We currently have a community of about 20 booklovers who look forward to coming together in a safe space to read and discuss books, share opinions, and build connections with their peers. New members are always welcome!
- We are constantly adding new, high quality and carefully chosen books to our library collection, ensuring an engaging, relevant and vibrant selection for students. New titles are featured on the Oliver homepage as well as displayed in the Learning Hub.
By developing a reading culture here at St Bede’s, our ultimate goal is to create and nurture lifelong readers.

Diocesan Cross Country Carnival
Under the clear blue skies and golden sun, students from St Bede’s gathered at Lake Glenbawn on Wednesday, 8th May, to compete in the annual Diocesan Cross Country. It was a beautiful day for running, with the picturesque landscape providing a stunning backdrop to a challenging and technical course.
With a mix of nerves and determination, our students took to the track, pushing themselves across steep inclines, uneven terrain, and long distances. Their resilience, grit, and school spirit were on full display, and their efforts were rewarded with outstanding results across multiple age groups.

U16’s Union Girls
The Under 16 Girls Rugby team delivered an outstanding performance across four thrilling matches, showcasing skill, resilience, and teamwork in equal measure.
Results:
- Win vs St Peters All Saints – 30-0
- Win vs Hunter Valley Grammar – 25-5
- Loss vs Catherine McAuley – 20-25
- Win vs Hunter River High School – 25-15
From the first whistle, it was clear that this team meant business. The opening game against St Peters All Saints saw a dominant 30-0 victory, with the girls showing brilliant synergy in both attack and defence. Speedster Ava Church crossed the line with ease, her pace too much for any defence to handle. Addison Elbourne was a defensive wall, repeatedly producing try-saving tackles that inspired her teammates.
In the tough match against Catherine McAuley, despite the narrow 25-20 loss, the girls showed enormous heart. Lexi Fernando was unstoppable through the middle, powering through tackles and gaining valuable metres. Gabrielle Hine lived up to her reputation as a tackling machine, shutting down numerous threats with textbook technique.
Playmaker Layle Kelekolio set up several tries throughout the tournament with smart vision and perfectly timed passes. In fact, it was Halle McDonald, named Player of the Day, who was the engine behind much of the team's attacking flow — her expert draw-and-pass game was second to none.
Whenever Eve Power found herself in open space, the scoreboard ticked over — her acceleration and finishing made her a constant threat. Bella Punch lived up to her name, storming through defenders and making bruising tackles that lifted the whole team.
The cohesion between the forwards and backs was made possible by the classy service of Molly Sadlier, whose precise passing put teammates into dangerous positions again and again. Olivia Schofield thrived in the contact zone, never shying away from a challenge, while Maddi Willingham did the unsung work — carrying strongly, securing rucks, and providing the platform others capitalised on.
The girls can be incredibly proud of their efforts. With three strong wins and a narrow loss, they’ve proven themselves as a formidable rugby side with enormous promise. Their sportsmanship, determination, and passion for the game were on full display throughout.

Bill Turner Cup (Girls)
The opening round for the girls Bill Turner Cup team proved too easy as they ran away with a 5-0 win over Maitland Grossmann High School. After a slow start, the girls quickly picked up the pace after a stunning strike from Eliza Harrison to make it 1-0 leading into the second half. This is where the girls lifted and showed real St Bede’s spirit as they quickly made it 2-0 then 3-0, again, off the boot of Eliza Harrison to complete her hat-trick. Following on from this, Claire Dupal made an excellent solo run through the midfield, beating her opponents with ease and slotting the ball home for 4-0. Finishing the scoring for the day was Maci Morgan, who tucked home a composed finish in the bottom right corner to make it 5-0. The girls are to be congratulated on their amazing result and for representing our college with pride. We now look ahead to the next round, where the girls will face Rutherford Technology High School. We wish them all the best!
Basketball Opens (Girls)
On Friday 9 May, our Opens Girls Basketball team competed at the Maitland Basketball stadium at the BSNSW tournament. Competing in a series of fast-paced games, the girls showcased outstanding sportsmanship and resilience throughout the day.
The team gave it their all and proudly secured a spot in the semi-finals, earning a well-deserved win along the way. Despite facing some tough losses during the day, the girl’s positive attitude and unity stood out and showcased a true reflection of our school values.
A special shoutout to our sharpshooters, Janali Haynes, Emmison Mate, and Eve Power, who sank multiple three-pointers across all games. A heartfelt thank you also goes to Addison Priestley for bringing her expertise to the day. Your support and guidance were truly appreciated by the team.
Another wonderful day of sport for St Bede’s. The girls should be very proud of the way they represented the school, not only through their performance, but also through the friendships, laughter, and lasting memories made throughout the day.

Basketball Opens (Boys)
The Open Boys recently represented St Bede’s at the annual BNSW Tournament held at the Maitland Federation Centre. Competing against schools from across the state, including older and more experienced teams, the boys displayed exceptional courage, teamwork, and school spirit throughout the day. It was a privilege to coach them and witness their growth across each game, both in confidence and cohesion. They proudly wore the St Bede’s jersey and gave their all, gaining valuable experience and making the College community proud.

Dio Football
The Junior Boys Diocesan Football Team had an extremely successful day out on Tuesday the 13th of May at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility.
The day started with a strong 7-0 win against Saint Francis Xavier College, with goals to Zachary Thomson (3), Bailey Lattimer, Ryan Gibbons, Koby Warland and an own goal. Our second match was against local rivals St Joseph’s Lochinvar in which St Bede’s won 2-1 courtesy of goals from Payton Wheeler and Ryan Gibbons. Set Piece Specialists. Our last group game required us to win or draw to progress to the semifinals, but true to the spirit of the team, a win was the only result we wanted.
Hayden Rawlings took matters into his own hands and scored a hat-trick, whilst Koby Warland and Payton Wheeler put the icing on the cake to make it 5-0. Top of the group, 13 goals scored, 1 goal conceded.
The Semi-Final was against our other local rivals All Saints College. Lachie Winkelman opened the scoring with a tidy finish to give St Bede’s a 1-0 lead. Hayden Rawlings made it a second before Lachie scored again and the score was at 3-0. Payton Wheeler found the back of the net also and 4-0 was the scoreline that stood at full time.
This win put St Bede’s into the Grand Final in back-to-back years against a very strong Trinity Catholic College. A strong opening half from Trinity saw them 2-0 up at the half. After some tactical changes, Ryan Gibbons pounced on an error and made no mistake. 2-1 and game on. St Bede’s continued to pile on the pressure, with stand in keeper Caiden Burgess making some crucial saves. 2-1 would remain the score when the full-time whistle was blown.
Congratulations to all players involved on a remarkable day and a special mention to ‘Coaches Player’ Ryan Gibbons and ‘Players Player’ Hayden Rawlings. Onwards and upwards.

Girls Dio Soccer Gala Day
The Junior girls football team gave it their all at the Dio Gala Day, kicking off the tournament with an exciting 1-0 victory in their opening match. Their teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship were on full display throughout the day. Despite narrowly missing out in the following three games, the girls showed great resilience and spirit, learning valuable lessons and growing stronger as a team. A big congratulations to all players for their effort and enthusiasm—your hard work and positive attitude made us proud!
