PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE – JOHN MURPHY

PRAYER

In your hands, O Lord,
we humbly entrust our brother Sam
and sister Alison.
In this life you embraced them
with your tender love;
deliver them now from every evil
and bid them eternal rest.
The old order has passed away:
welcome them into paradise,
where there will be no sorrow,
no weeping or pain,
but the fullness of peace and joy
with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
Amen.

St Bede…… Pray for us.

STAFF NEWS

As per last week’s Compass notification, the following staff appointments are now in place until the end of the year.

  • Lauren McCafferty – Acting Assistant Principal to work alongside our permanent Assistant Principal, Ms. Amber Carter.
  • Lauren Power – Acting HSIE Leader of Learning.
  • Abby O’Connor – Acting Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement.

Thank to Ms. Rebel Clark who assisted the College by filling the vacant Assistant Principal position for most of this year. With the late promotion at the end of last year of one of our former Assistant Principals, Ms. Emma South, into the Principal’s position at San Clemente, we were fortunate to be able to secure the services of Ms. Clark for most of this year. The contribution of Ms. Clark during this time was invaluable and appreciated.

With Ms. Tamara Powell taking a short stint of long service leave, I am happy to announce the appointment of Ms. Jasmine Simmons as the Temporary English Leader of Learning from Thursday 25 September to Friday 31 October 2025. Ms. Simmons is an experienced and valued leader and teacher at St Bede’s and will fulfill this role while continuing in her substantive role as Year 12 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement.

LAST FORTNIGHT OF TERM

In having achieved such a successful term so far, I ask for the support of parents/carers to keep students focused on their learning and to minimise absences from school, including the last day of term on Friday 26 September. We wish our Year 12 students the best in their upcoming graduation celebrations on Wednesday 24 September and encourage them to stay focused on their studies and to attend the optional subject specific workshops that will be offered prior to their HSC exams.

IN LOVING MEMORY

In times of profound loss, such as the recent passing of both our colleague Alison Ramage and student Samuel Lemmon, our school community becomes a vital source of strength and support. Grief can feel overwhelming and isolating, but coming together helps us heal collectively. Community provides comfort, understanding, and the reassurance that no one faces sorrow alone. Sharing memories, offering kindness, and listening with compassion foster resilience and connection. Our shared values of empathy and care guide us through this difficult time. Together, we will find hope and strength to move forward, holding the memories of Alison and Samuel in our hearts as we continue learning and growing as one community. The details of the funerals for Alison and Samuel have been sent through Compass, and we uphold Alison and Samuel, along with their families in our prayers.

Assistant Principal Report – Amber Carter and Lauren McCafferty

Wellbeing
With the arrival of spring, we’re reminded of the importance of balance and wellbeing. The longer days and warmer weather offer a perfect opportunity for students to spend time outdoors, be active and reconnect with nature. Whether it’s a walk, sport or simply enjoying the sunshine, these moments can have a positive impact on mental health and focus. Research has shown a positive correlation between physical activity and learning, as demonstrated in this piece from Harvard Health.  Please click on the below link for more information.

Click here for more information - Mind, mood and exercise can boost your memory and thinking skills

As assessments and commitments build, we encourage students to prioritise self-care, stay organised and seek support when needed. A balanced approach to study, rest and recreation is key to thriving both academically and personally.

Year 11 Preliminary Exams
Over the past week, our Year 11 students have demonstrated maturity and perseverance as they commenced their Preliminary exams under challenging circumstances. Their conduct, focus and support for one another has been commendable. As the exam block continues, we encourage all students to maintain a healthy balance between study, rest and connecting with community.

Year 10 Subject Choices
Year 10 students have now received their course selection for Stage 6. This is an exciting time as they begin to shape their senior learning journey. Over the coming weeks, students will engage in consultation meetings with key staff to discuss their academic package to ensure it aligns with their interests, strengths and future aspirations. These conversations are designed to support an informed and well-rounded approach to senior study. Parents and carers will also be invited to participate in these discussions towards the end of Term 4, ensuring a collaborative approach to each student’s Stage 6 pathway.

Attendance

Consistent attendance is essential for student success. When students attend school regularly, they engage fully with lessons, develop routines, and build meaningful relationships with peers and teachers. Missing even a few days can disrupt learning and make it harder to keep up with coursework. Attendance also fosters responsibility, commitment, valuable skills for future study and work. At our school, we prioritise attendance as a key part of supporting every student’s progress and wellbeing. We encourage families to ensure their children arrive on time and attend daily to maximise learning opportunities and achieve their potential.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and our school community.

Catholic Formation and Mission – Andrew Slater

Mass for Year 12 Students and their Families
A Mass will be celebrated for the intentions of all Year 12 students in schools within the Chisholm Region (St Bede’s Catholic College, All Saints’ College and St Joseph’s College). All members of our College community are invited to attend.

  • Where: St Joseph’s Catholic Church, East Maitland
  • When: 6pm Sunday 14 September

Light Our Way Year 12 Novena
The Light Our Way Year 12 Novena will occur during Week 9 of this term. Our Year 12 families are invited to attend on Friday 19 September at 8:25am in the Mary, Mother of Hope Oratory. Further information about this event will be sent to Year 12 families via Compass.

Year 12 Prayer Cards
In the coming weeks, Year 12 Prayer Cards will be distributed to the parishes of Beresfield, East Maitland and Morpeth. The cards contain a prayer for students completing their HSC, so that people in our parishes can pray for them during this time.

We would like to recognise the amazing artwork of Mary, Mother of Hope, which was created by Emily Gregory of Year 9. Congratulations Emily and thank you for your contribution to our College.

LEARNING DOMAIN

Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing and Engagement – Lauren Power
It has been another big term for Year 8! It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Year 8 apply themselves to the many opportunities St Bede’s has to offer – from demonstrating their house spirit at the Athletics Carnival, selecting their Stage 5 Electives, putting themselves forward for leadership roles, excelling in house competitions, actively engaging in wellbeing sessions, dominating on the sporting field and getting active for HPE Day.

NEW STUDENT LEADERS
Last Friday 5 September, our new student leaders for 2025-2026 were commissioned as part of a whole school liturgy. It was with immense pride that I presented leadership badges to the following Year 8 students:

Milly McCarthy, Benedict House & Wellbeing Portfolio

Grace Shibu, Dominic House & Learning Portfolio

Matilda Howard, Marian House & Social Justice Portfolio

Jessica March, McAuley House and Stewardship Portfolio

Reflection Day
On Monday 8 September, Year 8 participated in their Reflection Day, where the focus was on the concept of peace and valuing different perspectives. Students worked in small groups, throughout the day, continuing to develop connections, reflect and collaborate.

Changes to LoWE Role
Please also note the role of Year 8 LOWE will be assumed by Ms. Abby O’Connor for the remainder of 2025, while I take on the Leader of Learning – HSIE role. As I communicated in my letter to parents dated 8 September 2025, it has been a privilege to work with Year 8 over the course of 2025, and I very much look forward to stepping back into the LOWE role in 2026, ahead of our journey into Stage 5.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s progress and/or wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact abby.oconnor1@mn.catholic.edu.au, for the remainder of 2025.

Aboriginal Education – Karen Chapman
During the last week, a team of our Aboriginal students visited St Aloysius Catholic Primary School on two occasions to lead students in cultural activities.

The first was in celebration of Indigenous Literacy Day, an annual day of recognition of the power of Aboriginal traditions of storytelling. It also recognises the need for culturally relevant reading materials to be available to all students, including those in remote communities, ensuring all students have access to resources that reflect their worlds.

Students led a series of activities with kindergarten students at St Aloysius, including group storytelling using Aboriginal books, sand play using Aboriginal symbols, play doh and other art creations.

Our St Bede’s students showed great initiative in sharing their culture with Kindergarten groups, who embraced the activities with great enthusiasm!

The second visit to St Aloysius saw our St Bede’s students leading groups in an afternoon of traditional Indigenous games. By sharing traditional Indigenous customs, we keep our culture alive for a new generation, passing down the games that children have played for hundreds and thousands of years, all around Australia and the Torres Strait Islands.

Our students stepped into leadership roles and put St Aloysius students through their paces with a series of rotating games. They are to be commended on their fine example of leadership and sportsmanship skills with the younger students! It is important for our students to have these opportunities to develop these skills as leaders of our future and to share their culture with the wider school community.

R U OK Day

During Week 7, the Wellbeing Committee Leaders organised a range of events and activities aimed at supporting student and staff wellbeing. These included games, support sessions, and a BBQ.

Congratulations to Toby Burg, who won first place, and to Mr. Steinbeck, the runner-up in our annual Chess Competition. Students also had opportunities to “Be Active” through Stage 4, 5, and 6 competitions as well as HPE Day activities. The staff vs. students netball match was a highlight—congratulations to the teacher team on their win!

On 11 September, St Bede’s marked R U OK? Day. While conversations about mental health are important every day, R U OK? Day served as a reminder to check in with one another—something that can make a real difference to those experiencing a tough time. A special thank you goes to Scarlett Jones (Year 11) for designing a wonderful poster, and to all students who contributed to our support wall.

Students visited and engaged with a display to consider: ‘Who are my supports?’, competed in Mr Dalton’s Conversation Bingo, and enjoyed some treats from our Bake Sale and Canteen.

It was great to see so much active involvement in these initiatives!

Sport – Belinda Watts
Diocesan Basketball
Boys
On Tuesday 26 August, two teams competed at the Dio Basketball Carnival in Broadmeadow. The Year 7/8 boys won all three of their pool matches, progressing comfortably to the cross-over round. Unfortunately, they went down in a scrappy game against St Mary’s Gateshead, narrowly missing a spot in the semi-finals. Our Year 9/10 boys played well as a team throughout the day but were unable to progress past the pool stage.

Girls
On Wednesday 4 September, our Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 girls basketball teams represented the College at the Diocesan Basketball Competition in Newcastle. Both teams approached the day with a positive attitude, displayed great sportsmanship, and showed significant improvement as the games progressed.

A special mention goes to our junior team, who secured a fantastic win that progressed them to the cross-over rounds, an incredible achievement, particularly as many of the players were competing for the very first time.

We would also like to acknowledge our captains, Isla Wawszkowicz and Addison Priestley, who provided excellent leadership and support to their teams throughout the day.

Well done to all the girls for their effort, determination, and teamwork.

Basketball NSW Competition U16’s
Boys
On Thursday 28 August, a team of Year 7, 8 and 9 boys competed in the Basketball NSW U16 Schools Tournament. The team recorded impressive wins over Central Coast Sports College and St Joseph’s Lochinvar, but unfortunately lost to the eventual tournament winners, St Philip’s Christian College. The boys played with tremendous heart and sportsmanship, especially our young Year 7 students who held their own against many older and taller opponents.

Girls
On Friday 29 August, our U16s girls Basketball team represented the College at the Basketball NSW Annual Inter-School Tournament, held at the Maitland Federation Centre. The girls competed with determination and teamwork across the day, taking on strong opposition and improving with each game.

The team was captained by Addison Priestley, who impressed as both a reliable rebounder and a confident three-point shooter. A special mention also goes to Year 7 student Isla Wawszkowicz, who fearlessly drove to the rim, consistently drew fouls, and knocked down shots from beyond the arc all while playing up in age.

Throughout the day, the girls demonstrated excellent teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship. Each game saw continued improvement and a commitment to supporting one another. We are very proud of the way the team represented the college, and we congratulate them on their efforts in such a competitive tournament.

Futsal

St Bede’s boys had a brilliant run at the U14s State Futsal, proving themselves as the indisputable State Champions!

Strong wins over Taree High (7–1), Midcoast Christian School (8–0) and MacKillop College (2–0) set the tone before the boys stepped it up in the finals. In the semi against Bishop Druitt, Phoenix Borja struck twice before Noah Domalewski sealed a confident 3–0 victory. In the grand final against local rivals Maitland Christian School, Hayden Rawlings opened the scoring before Noah Domalewski and Phoenix Borja took control, with Noah Domalewski completing a hat-trick in a 5–1 win.

St Bede’s scored 25 goals and conceded just 2 across the tournament, with Jasper Skelton acting like a brick wall in goals to help secure 3 clean sheets. The goals were shared right across the team, with Noah Domalewski, Phoenix Borja, Finn Murphy, Darcy Williams, Lucas Goodwin, Hayden Rawlings and Joshua Dadge all getting on the scoresheet.

This outstanding achievement earns the boys a spot at Nationals in Brisbane!

Rugby Union

U14s XV Rugby Union – McKendry Shield

Our U14s boys represented St Bede’s proudly in the McKendry Shield at Hunter Valley Grammar School on Wednesday 28 August. Despite challenging windy conditions that made football difficult, the team displayed grit, discipline and strong teamwork across the day.

Match Results

  • 12–10 win vs All Saints Maitland
  • 24–7 win vs Hunter Valley Grammar School
  • 10–12 loss vs Trinity College Adamstown
  • 19–10 win vs St Joseph’s Lochinvar

These results secured the boys a place in the upcoming Hunter Finals Night on Wednesday 24 September at No. 2 Sportsground, Newcastle. They will be joined by our U16s girls, who have also qualified and will compete on the same evening.

Finals Night Schedule

  • U14s Boys Rugby Union 4:45 pm
  • U16s Girls 7s Rugby 5:30 pm

Player Highlights
Captain Finn Brownlee led from the front with strong tackles, crucial turnovers and powerful running. He was well supported by Matteo Tettamanzi, Flynn Ginty and Will Manyweathers, who worked tirelessly at the breakdown to secure possession and win turnovers.

All players who played in the tight five, Ashton Streeter, Xander Cuneo, Kolby Neumann, Tallis Parkinson, Samuel Taylor, Marcello Cable, Ethan Locking and Levii Chuter, contributed with hard carries that built momentum and wore down opposition forwards. Nash Maytom provided clean service from halfback, allowing Darcy Bendeich at flyhalf to break defensive lines and control the tempo of the game.

In the centres, Alex Robinson and Charlie Jones combined solid running with excellent defensive work. Jack Osmond and Max Wilcher defended courageously on the wings, shutting down opposition pace and preventing several tries. Taj Richardson at fullback added attacking spark and crucial cover tackles, while also landing key conversions. Even when Kye Lawrence’s playing day was cut short, he continued to serve the team by running water and relaying instructions from the coaches.

This was a true team effort, with every player making a valuable contribution on the day. We look forward to seeing both the U14s boys and U16s girls represent St Bede’s at Finals Night, and we encourage our community to come along and support if possible.

NSW Rugby Union Secondary Schools 7s – Hunter Carnival
On Tuesday 2 September, St Bede’s students took the field at Ernie Calland Fields, Gateshead for the NSW Rugby Union Secondary Schools 7s Hunter Carnival. With teams entered in the U14s boys, U14s girls and U16s girls divisions, it was a great opportunity for our students to test themselves against strong opposition from across the region.

The carnival provided plenty of exciting rugby, with our players showing skill, teamwork and determination in every match.

U14s Boys

  • Game 1: 17–17 draw vs All Saints College Maitland
  • Game 2: 19–26 loss vs Trinity College Adamstown

The boys showed plenty of resilience in two very close contests. Despite falling short in their second game, their overall performance across the day was rewarded with a wildcard entry into the State Finals.

U14s Girls

  • Game 1: 15–14 win vs Hunter River High School
  • Game 2: 10–24 loss vs Trinity College Adamstown

The U14s girls impressed with their defensive effort and running rugby. Their preparation was heavily impacted by poor weather, managing only a single hour of training on grass in the lead up to the carnival. Despite this limited preparation, they pushed their opponents to the final whistle and only missed a place at the State Finals after conceding a try beyond the buzzer in their second game.

U16s Girls

  • Game 1: 40–15 win vs Hunter Valley Grammar School
  • Game 2: 5–30 loss vs Trinity College Adamstown

The U16s girls started the day with a commanding win and, although tested in their second match, their efforts earned them a wildcard entry to the State Finals.

Both the U14s boys and U16s girls will now compete at the NSW State Finals on Thursday 11 September at the Central Coast Regional Sporting and Recreation Complex, Tuggerah.

This was another valuable experience for our students, many of whom are still developing their skills in the 7s format. Their performances highlighted the depth of rugby talent at St Bede’s and the positive way our players support one another on and off the field. Congratulations to all three teams on their efforts, and we look forward to seeing our finalists take the field at Tuggerah.

NSWCCC Netball Championships
On Friday, 29th August, under clear blue skies and warm sunshine, two talented teams from St Bede’s Catholic College proudly represented our school at the NSWCCC Netball Carnival held in Penrith. Competing in the Championship Division, both our Year 7/8 A and Year 9/10 A teams demonstrated exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and school spirit throughout the day.

Year 7/8 A Team

Our Year 7/8 A team faced a highly competitive field, with strong opponents from across the state. Despite the challenges, the girls showed resilience and determination in every match. Their teamwork and positive attitude were evident, and they celebrated a well-earned victory during the day. The experience provided valuable growth opportunities for our younger athletes, who represented the College with pride and enthusiasm.

Year 9/10 A Team – A Historic Achievement

The Year 9/10 A team delivered a truly outstanding performance, showcasing remarkable cohesion, strategic play, and unwavering commitment. Their unity on the court was inspiring, as they battled through each round with grit and grace. The team’s efforts culminated in a thrilling run to the Grand Final, where they narrowly missed out on the top spot against Caroline Chisholm College, Glenmore Park. Finishing 2nd in the state among all Catholic schools in NSW and the ACT is a phenomenal achievement — the highest ever for St Bede’s in this competition. This milestone marks a proud moment in our College’s sporting history.

A special thank you goes to Imogen Brownlee and Taneisha Twitchin, who took on the challenging role of umpiring throughout the day. Their professionalism, fairness, and confidence in making tough calls contributed significantly to the smooth running of the carnival. We are incredibly grateful for their dedication and leadership.

Across both teams, our students exemplified the values of St Bede’s. Their behaviour on and off the court was commendable, and they were wonderful ambassadors for our College. Congratulations to all involved in this memorable day of netball. We look forward to building on this success in future competitions!

Rugby League
U13s Nines Girls
On Thursday 28th August, our U13s girls represented St Bede’s Catholic College with pride, determination, and true team spirit at the Kacey Drummond Shield Competition at Lakeside Sporting Complex, Raymond Terrace — and for most, it was their very first Rugby League match. They contested two tough 9-a-side games, showing courage, skill, and growth from start to finish. Game 1 against Rutherford Technology High School saw the girls produce several well-constructed tries in a 38–22 contest, while Game 2 against Callaghan College highlighted their improving defence, communication, and teamwork, even as the score finished 39–10. Player of the Day went to Grace, whose fearless last-ditch tackles saved five certain tries and lifted the entire team with her composure, determination, and encouragement.

While the scoreboard did not fall in our favour, the girls walked away with something more valuable: resilience, belief, and the knowledge that they can achieve anything together. From powerful runs to clever attacking plays, every player contributed to a day filled with learning and pride. We also extend heartfelt thanks to our parents, carers, and Year 9 student coaches, whose encouragement and support were vital in creating memories that will last well beyond the field. The future of girls Rugby League at St Bede’s looks incredibly bright, and we can’t wait to see what this team does next.

U15s Nines Girls
On Thursday 4 September, our U15s girls took to the field at Mount View Park, Cessnock, representing St Bede’s Catholic College with grit, determination and plenty of team spirit.

After a first-round bye, the girls wasted no time making their mark in Game 2 against St Philip’s Christian College, Cessnock. In a nail-biting contest, St Bede’s came away with a thrilling 17–14 victory, thanks to a try from Addison Priestly, two tries from Halle McDonald, and a clutch conversion by Ava Church.

Momentum carried into Game 3 against Rutherford Technology High School, where the girls were dominant from start to finish, recording a strong 12–0 win. Shelby Griffis and Halle McDonald, both crossed for tries, with Halle McDonald and Ava Church adding conversions to seal the result.

The toughest test came against All Saints’ College, Maitland, where Halle McDonald added another try to her tally, but despite a valiant effort, the girls went down 9–4 in a defensive battle.

In the final match — a short but intense 13-minute clash with Mount View High School — Bella Punch's try secured a 4–4 draw. Agonisingly, had the girls claimed the win instead of the draw, they would have booked a spot in the semi-finals. So close!

While they narrowly missed the cut, the U15s girls showed resilience, teamwork and plenty of flair across all matches.

Hunter Sports Academy
Congratulations to Hope Tierney who was successful at the recent Hunter Sports Academy Talent ID Day and has been selected to be a part of their 6-week strength and conditioning program.
